10 Best Nollywood / African Movies To Watch On NetFlix

Being a Nigerian, it’s always a cool thing to enjoy the Nigerian contents even on video streaming services like Netflix. With loads of movies and TV shows on the platform, picking the best Nollywood or African movies to spend your valuable time watching, can be tricky and that’s where this post comes to play.

Netflix is a movie and TV show streaming service. I like to think of the service as perhaps, the most popular of its kind. Amazon prime being the most closely related, I think.

For years of initial operation, being able to download movies and episodes of TV shows was almost not possible on the platform. However, the service has introduced being able to download those movies which frankly, I consider as a plus. That way, even if you are out of data, you can still enjoy the already downloaded content.

The platform houses different movies and TV shows from different countries. Not just those from the US or UK. If you enjoy Anime movies, they are there. Korean action movies which frankly, I tend to love lately, is also part of the bargain.

Nollywood gradually paving its way to being globally recognized, is also part of the bargain here. Unfortunately, there are a limited number of Nollywood or African Movies you can find on Netflix.

Having stated that, I’d like to introduce to you, my best 10 Nollywood or African Movies on Netflix to find pleasure enjoying. That way, you would be sure you are getting value for your time.

Of course, you are more than welcome to enjoy every other Nigerian or African content on the platform. I am simply just stating my best 10 here for you. At least, to ease your choice of decision-making.

Best 10 Nollywood Movies or African Movies To Watch On NetFlix

Just before we head on to talk on my best 10 African movies, this is only and solely from my point of view. These are what I consider to be the best 10. You may think otherwise and, it’s totally fine.

In no particular order, these are some of the best Nollywood or in general, African movies you should watch on Netflix.

1. The Arbitration

Originally released in 2016, this is kind of twist between romance and business. The description has it thus:

the arbitration nollywood movie

An arbitration panel is formed after a company CEO in Nigeria is sued for wrongful dismissal and rape by an employee with whom he had an affair.

The movie stars Adesua Etomi and O.C Ukeje as the lead characters. The story-line basically has Adesua suing her ex lover (so to call it) for rape and depriving her of what she worked for in the company. The ex lover in this case, is O.C Ukeje.

I consider the movie to be really interesting and would most likely, have you glued to your screen. Especially if you are one with interest in business.

2. When Love Happens

Released in 2014, this is a movie strictly about romance. The movie description has it thus:

When love happens nollywood movie to watch on netflix

Fed up with coordinating weddings for everyone else, unlucky-in-love event planner, MO, turns to the internet to see if she can find her own Mr. Right.

With a rating of 97% on Netflix, the movie is sure to wow you. Especially if you are the type who is into romantic movies.

The description clearly explains what the movie is about. MO, who is an event planner by day and a blogger by night, resolves to the internet in search for love. This clearly didn’t turn out well for her.

At the end of the day, all the love she couldn’t find (in hopeless places), was seating right next to her all along.

A sequel has been released and it’s titled ‘When Love happens… Again‘. Unfortunately, I can’t seem to find that on Netflix. Thankfully, it’s available on iRokotv. If you’d like to have that iRokotv app experience on your television, being able to use the irokotv app on your TV is doable with an extra help.

3. The Visit

I initially watched this movie on iRokotv but somehow, stumbled on it again on Netflix. I really think the movie is worth a mention and that’s precisely why it’s appearing on my list.

The major casts are Nse Ikpe-Etim, Femi Jacobs, Blossom Chukwujekwu and the movie description has it thus:

The lives of upright, conversation Chidi and Eugenia are thrown into disarray when a loudmouthed, hard-partying new couple moves in next door.

The whole plot of the movie has it that when two couples (who are ideally neighbors) came together under a roof, secrets were disclosed and true personalities were unveiled.

4. When Love Comes Around

This is another romantic movie released in 2014. Heck! For the most part, Nollywood movies are often about love and drama.

Staring Edward Kufuor, Mikki Osei Beek, Jim Iyke, the description of the movie, has it thus:

Much to her distress, a woman who’s long put her guard up by dating men only for their money suddenly finds herself falling in love for real.

Technically, the I think the movie was shot in Ghana. For some reason, I consider it to be a Ghana movie. Just as the description has it, the plot is about a lady who is only accustomed to dating men for their money with no emotions attached.

She bumped into her ‘then’ high school sweetheart who turns out to be a cook and manages his aunt’s restaurant. When it comes to finances, she isn’t the type who would date such a man. However, spending some quality time catching up with him and getting to know him again for being him, she soon fell in love. This time, for real. Regrettably, she was late to the party.

It’s definitely another interesting African movie for you to watch on Netflix.

5. Head Gone

Are you a fan of comedy movies? This one is for you.

head gone Nigerian movie

Released in 2014, this movie stars at least, one of your favorite Nigerian comedian, actor or musician. Well, technically, the only Nigerian musician I could pick out, was 2face Idibia. Oh, Sound Sultan was also shown even if he only got a few minutes of spotlight in the movie. Think of his role as that substitute that is being brought into the football match at 89 minutes.

The movie stars other top comedians in the industry; likes of Basket Mouth, Akpororo and a few others. Likes of Zack Orji, Eniola Badmus, Hafeez Oyetoro, Wale Ojo and and a host of others

At inception, I wondered how the directors would fit all of these persons into one movie and considering the play time being 1hr, 52. The movie turned out well, although not up to expectation courtesy of unrealistic scenes, it still sorta turned out being funny.

6. Gone Too Far

Originally released in 2013, Gone Too far was entirely shot in the UK and stars O.C Ukeje, Malachi Kirby, Adelayo Adelayo and Shanika Warren-Markland as the lead characters.

The film has the description thus:

A British-raised youth and the Nigerian elder brother he’s never met struggle to connect and accept each other’s culturally different words.

The plot is about a British-raised youth who was perhaps, in love with a lady who apparently, wasn’t reciprocating the love back. Instead, got into trouble with the lady’s ex who apparently, doesn’t seem to have gotten over her.

Thankfully, the Nigerian elder brother who has been hoping to connect with the British brother, sorta saves him from making a full mess of himself.

7. Beasts Of No Nation

This movie originally released in 2015, has received quite a number of awards. Co-Produced and staring Idris Elba, I consider the movie to be a bit aggressive and entertaining.

The movie description has it that when civil war tears his family apart, a young west African boy is forced to join a unit of mercenary fighters and transform into a child soldier.

Shot in Ghana and starring Idris Elba, Abraham Attah, Ama K. Abebrese, Grace Nortey, David Dontoh, and Opeyemi Fagbohungbe, the film is based on the 2005 novel of the same name by Uzodinma Iweala;― the book itself being named after a Fela Kuti Album.

If you have a thing against watching anything relating to violence, you way want to skip this one. If otherwise, this is definitely a movie to watch on Netflix.

8. Couple Of Days

Released in 2016, Couple of days is a Nollywood film based on Drama and romantic drama.

The movie description has it thus:

Three couples, each in different phases of romance, head to Ibadan for a fun and frisky holiday. But secrets soon spill, causing trouble in Paradise.

From the description above, you can pretty much tell what the movie is all about. Hence, there’s not much to be said on the subject.

If you are a fan of romance drama, this is definitely one African movie to watch on Netflix.

9. The Wedding Party

If you are a fan of Nigerian movies, there is a huge chance you must have heard about the wedding party.

the wedding party nigeria movie

Released in 2016, the movie gained a lot of traction in the industry featuring Banky W and Adesuwa who not only got married in the movie, but also in the real world.

That’s the first movie I’d see Banky W star in and quite frankly, he did exceptionally well.

A sequel was released in 2017 titled Wedding Party 2: Destination Dubai. That also did well in gaining people’s attention in the cinemas. However, it isn’t available on Netflix, yet.

10. Out Of Luck

This movie certainly deserves some accolades. No jokes, it left me feeling some kinda way. Big ups to the producers, the directors, the cast.

out of luck movie on netflix

Out of luck was originally released in 2015. It takes a branch off the usual just romance and drama. Although romance was it in (trust Nigerians), it had a twist of crime and action.

If you are a fan of such movies, out of luck is definitely one to look out for. It comes highly recommended.

So, there you have it guys. Those are my best 10 Nollywood or African Movies to watch on Netflix. Although there are a tiny few other African movies on the platform, I’m sure the list above will get you started with enjoying what Nollywood has to offer.

Again, Nollywood Movies on Netflix are really limited. Maybe, just maybe, I haven’t been able to find them yet. Anyway, do make do with this. If the need arises, this list will be updated with more interesting films for you to watch out for.
